Abstract
In previous publications, we have reported the identification of Vibrio cholerae isolates during 1969 epidemic in Korea as Vibrio cholerae, biotype El Tor serotype Ogawa.
In this study, experiments were conducted: 1) Mukerjee phage typing and test for release of Kappa-type phage with Vibrio cholerae isolates in Korea in 1969 in order to provide evidence that the epidemic was caused by a single strain of Vibrio cholerae and to differentiate between Celebes type and Ubon type El Tor, and 2) Biochemical and biological characterization of 5 strains of Vibrio cholerae isolates in Philippines in 1969 in order to compare the results with those of Vibrio cholerae isolates in Korea in 1969.
The results are summarized as follows;
1. All of 31 strains (5 Ogawa type strains per 6 major epidemic loci and 1 Hikojima strain) sampled from Vibrio cholerae isolates in Korea- proved to be sensitive only to Mukerjee phage type III.
2. Of 32 strains so far tested among Vibrio cholerae isolates in Korea in 1969, 31 strains were shown to Kappa-type phage positive and identified as Celebes type El Tor.
3. Five Vibrio cholerae isolates in Philippines in 1969 were identified as Vibrio cholerae, biotype El Tor, serotype Ogawa, having same biochemical and biological characteristics as those of Korean epidemic strains in 1969, and they were also Kappa-type phage positive.
